Portland Pictured
As sometimes is the case, these two photos have nothing in common except for both being taken in Portland.

Observatory & Report
From Waterville Street:
This is a general question. These old stone markers are on many sidewalks around town. They seem to have a M or a W carved into them. Can anyone confirm what they mark? My best guess is that the letter is a W and perhaps it indicates a water line or something.

Eats: The Works Bakery Cafe
This is not a food blog, but I do eat sometimes so I think it's okay to occasionally share that here. This isn't as much of a review as it is an overview, because I don't feel qualified to judge. [/preface]
I dined at The Works Bakery Cafe location on Temple Street this rainy Saturday morning with my girlfriend. Located on the ground floor of the parking garage that also houses the Nickelodeon Theater, The Works has a pretty comfortable space. I recommend dining outside when it is not raining and warmer than 35 degrees.
The Works offers a variety of breakfast and lunch items, made from "pure and natural ingredients." I had a bacon, egg & cheese breakfast sandwich on a plain bagel while my breakfast partner had a plain bagel with cream cheese. The coffee is, I think, there own concoction.
I give The Works a thumbs up, on a scale of thumbs down to thumbs up. Tasty and not too pricey.

PortlandDailyPhoto.Com
At last I have officially moved the blog from:
http://portlandmainedaily.blogspot.blogger.long/name.com to www.PortlandDailyPhoto.com.
You can still get here using the old domain name, and existing RSS feeds and such should still be working fine. Let me know if you run into any trouble due to the move and I will see what I can do.
Today's photo is a reminder, for anyone who may not recall, that I enjoy pictures that 'flatten' a cityscape and show several contrasting layers. Taken from the Free Street / Monument Square parking garage looking West:

April Exchange Street
In front of 93 Exchange Street. Not sure if the garbage bin adds to the photo or takes away. At least it's one of the nicer city garbage bins.
The cupcakeuccino on the Mornings in Paris board sounds great:

Spring Training
This photo is from Deering Street in the Parkside Neighborhood. Other than the people playing pass, I liked the tree branches framing the top of the photo.

Here are some photos from March that I haven't shared yet. Sometimes I find that I take far too many pictures.

Reny's Portland
Reny's is open today! These pictures are from a couple days ago, so the scaffolding is all down, the signs are all up, and all systems are go. I look forward to having a Maine adventure here sometime soon.

The Eagle Has Landed
To answer yesterday's question, the Eagle landed on the Time & Temperature Building over in Monument Square. Good eyes!

Where is this? Eagle Edition
A new edition to the "Where is this?" series. Feel free to guess where in Portland this Eagle is in the comments section. No prizes this time. But the winners can have a sense of pride in their random knowledge of Portland.

Anderson Street
This photo is of part of the oddly colored buildings(s) on Anderson Street in East Bayside:
Here's a reader photo of the same building, submitted on the Portland Maine Daily Photo Flickr Group by Maine Mike. Thanks for participating, Mike! Check out some of this user's other photos here.

Biennial
As you can see from the banner, the biennial is running from April 7 - June 5. According to the museum's website, the biennial showcases the best in today's art world by artists associated with Maine. I am a fan of the free Fridays (from 5-9pm) at the museum.

Pullen Fountain
It looks like work has just about been completed around the Pullen Fountain on Federal Street (located right behind the central fire station on Congress Street). The fountain is a horse watering trough and is named after Stanley Thomas Pullen, who was a president of the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals. The benches and granite pavement are new, as well as the traffic barriers along the road to protect the fountain from snowplows and closely parked cars.
Here's a photo I took in in 2009 of the fountain, looking in the other direction:

Better Know a Trail: Loring Memorial Trail
In today's "Better Know a Trail," Portland Trails edition, here is the short but excellent Loring Memorial Trail. The trail was officially opened in October 2010 and connects North Street and Loring Memorial Park with the Eastern Promenade and Back Cove Trails. Here's a post on the Friends of the Eastern Promenade site about this trail.

Sunday Redo - Exchange Street Moment
I've recently been going through my extensive photographic archives from the last few years, trying to pick out photos to add to my new photography website [http://coreytempleton.zenfolio.com/]. In addition to picking photos to add to my site and editing them to be suitable for selling, I am coming across a lot of photos that I shared here in the past that could have been edited differently. Here is an example. This is from Exchange Street last summer:
And here it is with a fresh perspective and color:
