Flashback: August 2011

In the Morning

Another addition to my recent collection of foggy photos. This of course is Fore Street.

The Time is Up

Like any sophisticated modern city, Portland has quite a few clocks around downtown. From many spots around town you can simply look up to determine the time. Here are just a few of the non-digital time pieces:

On the tower of the First Parish Church.

On the roof level of Thomas Block, Commercial Street.

Actually not sure if this one one in Congress Square works any more. It would look great all lit up at night. 

A class romanesque clock on the top of One Portland Square. 

Yellow City

A bright yellow box on the corner of Park Avenue and Forest Avene. I think this particular box has something to do with controlling the traffic lights at the intersection or perhaps controlling the nearby streetlights 

Fade Away

Some fog hanging over Congress Street and the Time & Temperature building.

Pier of Portland

The view down Portland Pier towards Commercial Street on a foggy morning. I wanted to capture this without any people and it actually took several minutes for the scene to look empty. 

Downbound Train

Vote Fred? The old Veterans Bridge is in the background.

The Doors

Just some doorways around the West End. A follow up to this post from last summer. 

On the Road: Westbrook

Here are a few photographs from Westbrook, Portland's neighbor to the... (any guesses?) west. These photos each involve the photogenic S.D. Warren Paper Mill which sits along the mighty Presumpscot River. Westbrook reminds me of several Bruce Springsteen songs, but overall it seems like a healthy little city.

Jewell Falls

Today's photo is of Jewell Falls. As noted on the Portland Trails website, this is Portland's only natural waterfall and it's located within the Fore River Sanctuary area. It's probably not the largest waterfall you will ever see, but it's worth checking out!

A house with some interesting vines on Washington Avenue, way out there in the North Deering neighborhood. 

Movin' on Up

The Casco Bay Bridge opens up for some marine traffic. Today I learned this type of bridge is a "bascule bridge." 

Benched

I've been thinking about doing a series to document the variety of benches found in Portland. But here's just one photo for now. This type of bench is popular along the Eastern Promenade. I give it a solid A for looks and a B for comfort.

Not the Front Entrance: Part 2

This is the second part of my unacclaimed series in which I document the back entrances to some of Portland's food purveyors. Here is part one, in case you missed it.  These images are not meant to disrespect these establishments, but merely aim to provide a view that most people don't see.

Lincoln Park Fountain

The fountain in Lincoln Park is undergoing some sort of renovations. I'm assuming it will be up and running again for the 5th annual Picnic Music & Arts Festival on August 25th. 

Here's a photo of the very same fountain, taken in the 1910's, via the Library of Congress Website.

New Eastland

This isn't the type of photo that the Eastland Park Hotel would use to advertiste their establishment, with the plywood in the windows and whatnot, but it's a good sign of the improvements that are taking place. As stated on their website, the hotel will be re-opening in the Spring of 2014 after a very extensive renovation project. When it is open for business again it will officially be part of the Westin Hotel franchise. I look forward seeing this landmark building all spruced up, although it's going to take a lot of work to beautify the brutalist-style addition on the north side of the building as pictured below.

Unrelated to the above (sorry I've been saying that a lot lately), check out the July/August 2012 issue of Portland Magazine to see a couple of my photos on pages 22 and 23. My photos, which you can probably spot, are of the observatory and of Congress Street during last year's Sidewalk Art Festival. Hay Ball

This photo is the the compact car with a hay ball on the roof traveling down Congress Street on a recent Frist Friday. The hay ball and it's owner, Michael Shaughnessy, will be making a documentary called "Wonderment: The Hay Ball's Journey Across America." Check out  all the details of this adventure on the Kickstarter campaign for the project.

Gentlemen of the Road: Setting Up

A few pre-show shots of the Eastern Promenade before the "Gentlemen of the Road" concert, featuring Mumford and Sons. I will be attending the concert, but am not sure if I can take my DSLR inside so I had to get some shots before hand just in case!
