Have a Seat

This is by Lobsterman Park, the corner of Middle and Temple Streets.

And on a related note (benches and seating in parks), the photo below is also posted on my other blog, Walk Around Portland, check it out sometime. This is in Congress Square Park/Plaza:

Summer's Here and the Time is Right

I thought this Ford Falcon parked on Casco Street had a good look to it, or at least it's taillights were interesting to me. Here it is from a couple angles.

Also on Casco Street, this telephone pole (which still appears to be carrying two wires) is in rough shape.

Golden Bike

I've seen this bike around town a few times. I bet it's worth its weight  in gold.

LL Bean Outlet

The LL Bean outlet store on Congress Street will be leaving later in September. As seen in the news a while back, they decided not to renew their lease and will focus their  efforts more on the outlet in Freeport. There has been a bit of discussion about  what may move into this prime spot but I haven't heard about any  final decisions. I like the proposal of splitting the space up for a few different uses. what would  you like to see  most?

Gorham's Corner

These are a few shots of the Gorham's Corner area, which is between the Old Port and  the West End. It was once home to primarily Irish immigrants and is a pleasant part of town with some quality housing and small businesses and restaurants.

Here's  a little map of the area with numbers corresponding  to where the photos above were taken.

Holy Iced Coffee

Can't go wrong with 4 servings of iced coffee, especially during the few months of summer here.

Park Street Townhouses

One of Portland's finest looking streets is Park Street (not to be confused at all with Park Ave). The Park Street townhouses, circa 1835, and the surrounding buildings from equally historical times create a unique urban space with an inviting atmosphere. Unit #3 at 112 Park Street is for rent, check out some interior pictures of it here. You may also recall this photo of the townhouses I took last spring.

Oceanic Gateway Park

The park space by Ocean Gateway is a nice spot  to wander around this time of year. Bring a book and pack a picnic.

PortlandMaineDaily!

And the easy answer to yesterday's where is this? question is Deering Oaks, on the side of State Street where the Rose Garden is (bonus question - does this side of Deering Oaks have it's own name?)

Where is this? #4

First, a photo of the "best" convenience store in Portland:

On to the Where is This? photo. Feel free to leave your guess/answer in the form of a comment.

Old Port Festival

Yesterday was the 37th annual Old Port Festival. It almost rained but ended up staying dry, which is always nice. I wasn't there for photographs so I just  got two snapshots, as seen below.

I believe this was a demonstration showing the positive effects of mass transit and was located where a light-rail station is planned.

For more information and pictures from the festival, head here

Port Land

There are some new signs on the streetlights along Congress Street that were put up a few weeks ago. On one side they say Portland and  have an artistic design, and  the other side has a corresponding artistic design along with the name of the section of Congress Street you are in (Arts District in the case below). It's an interesting look/concept and I am interested in knowing who designed these and if the branding will be continued over to other places such as the Downtown District or even the city website (which both need a facelift).

Update - Thanks to this post's commentators for sharing that the designs are by Amy at Pinecone + Chickadee. Maybe I can get around to photographing a few more of these designs around town.

Here to There

The renovations of One Monument Square are coming along nicely. As mentioned previously, the new facade is all up. Work continues on the ground level with a new entrance facing the square, landscaping, and the addition of a new restaurant/retail space on the lower right side of the picture. As you may have seen in the news, the firm Pierce Atwood will be moving from One Monument Square to the building in the picture below in the future.

The future home of Pierce Atwood will be in the building in the middle here, at 258 Commercial Street. It is currently a warehouse and will be  renovated to include ground-floor marine related business space and offices in the upper floors. For more info, here is a MaineBiz story about it.

Bayside Bowl

Bayside Bowl is now open at 58 Alder Street, in Bayside. It features 12 lanes of ten pins, a corner for concerts, and a kitchen for your dining needs. The first concert is on Saturday (for more info visit HillyTown.com) The Press Herald ran a story about the place a few weeks ago, check that out as well.  Here's  google map with Bayside Bowl's coordinates:

Urban General Store

On the left side of this photo looking West on Congress Street, you can see that Urban General Store is now open, formerly Urban Hardware. I haven't been inside yet, but their sign promises beer, wine, grocery, sandwiches, hardware, and coffee (oh my!).

Go West

I promise I won't be posting just photos of buildings taken from the same angle every day. That being said, here's a beauty of a building on Spring Street in the West End. It may or may not be part of the Waynefleet School which is right next to it.

And here's the corner of May St and Danforth St, also in the West End. I felt that this photo had good exposure and such (or better than usual at the least):

Fixing Up

This house is on State Street, close to Longfellow Square. They are fixing it up and I'm sure it will look great when finished. But in the meantime it looks haunted.

I was over the bridge in South Portland for a little while last night. Here's a few quick snapshots:

Memorial Day Parade 2010

I didn't mention it yesterday, but I was aware that it was Memorial Day, especially since I was at the Portland Memorial Day Parade again. It's the most patriotic day in town, I would say. Here is the start of the parade, winding down Congress Street:

After the parade there is a gathering in Monument Square with guest speakers and such:

Two time Olympic gold-medalist Seth Wescott (and one-time guest on the Colbert Report):

I thought this was interesting with the guy on the cell-phone walking in-step with the officers:

That's enough for today, I might post some more tomorrow.
