The American flag flying in Monument Square today in honor of Memorial Day. The Our Lady of Victories statue was dedicated in 1891 and according to the Portland Public Art Committee it honors "the 5,000 lives the city lost to the Civil War, fully one-sixth of its population [at the time]."

A Thursday Throwback to May 2014 and a "Looking into the Past" entry from Commercial Street. The historical photo is via the Portland Maine History 1786 to Present Facebook group. Wouldn't it be something to see streetcars return here? It's happening in a lot of other cities.

A Pleasant Street in the Springtime
The interesting block of buildings at the bottom of Pleasant Street, where the Old Port meets the West End. There is usually a line of cars parked in front of these buildings so I was excited to finally get a decent shot without all the clutter.

Tugboat Parking Only
A flock of tugboats meeting at the State Pier. The dump truck in the parking lot gives a good sense of the size of these powerful boats.
