Horse & Wagon
It's that festive time of the year again when you can randomly hear a couple of horses pulling people around the Old Port in a wagon. Per the events page on the Portland Downtown District's website, the free horse and wagon rides are from Nov. 23 to Dec. 23 and depart from Monument Square on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons. |

Lock 'Em Up
I don't mean to give the impression that Portland is an unsafe place to park your bike, but one should always be mindful of properly locking their ride up in a safe area and not leaving it unattended for several days. Here's some cautionary tales from around the peninsula.
And FYI, you can register your bike on the Portland Police Department's website so it is on record in the event that the entire bicycle (not just the wheels and such) are stolen.

2013 Portland, Maine Photo Calendar
In this spirit of Black Friday, I am happy to announce that my 2013 calendar is now up for sale! You can pick up a copy for just $24.99 (plus shipping costs) over at CafePress. Remember to select the "start month" as January 2013 when you place your order (it defaults to starting in Nov. 2012 and I can't change that). I'll periodically post previews of the calendar here for your enjoyment.

Etheridge Foundry
Observant pedestrians in Portland have likely noticed these manhole covers that were made locally by Etheridge Foundry.
Below is a recent photo of the Etheridge Foundry headquarters, located on Ocean Avenue almost in Falmouth. I'm not sure how much business they do these days. I wasn't able to find any info about them on the internet other than their blurb on Manta.com: Etheridge Foundry & Machine Co in Portland, ME is a private company categorized under Manhole Covers Manufacturers. Our records show it was established in 1927 and incorporated in Maine

Hospitable
A view from the Veteran's Memorial Bridge towards Mercy Hospital's Fore River Campus, with Maine Medical Center looming in the background. I know I just posted a photo of Maine Med yesterday, but I was recently going back through some photos from July for a client and this one caught my eye as being worth sharing. |

Looking into the Past: Elm & Congress
The old photo comes via the Portland Maine History 1786 to Present Facebook group. Per their description of the photo: "Officer George Graney, standing in a Portland Police Traffic box at the intersection of Elm & Congress Streets, in 1926." You can check out more of my "looking into the past" photos here. Feel free to send me suggestions for this series, too.

First Snow
Portland is receiving its first shipment of snow this morning. We are only getting somewhere between a dusting and two inches and it is expected to change over to a rain/wintry mix later this morning so I had to get a couple photos of the snow from my apartment before it disappears.
