94 Commercial Street, in the Old Port. On the left side of the building is Andy's Old Port Pub and on the right side is Casco Variety. My best guess is that the upper floors are office space. According to property tax records, the building was constructed in 1900. It's notable for the apparent tilt of the structure. Not sure if it's a flaw or a design feature. |

Where is this: Smokestack Edition
Feel free to leave a guess (or the indisputably correct answer if you are confident of your Portland spotting abilities) in the form of a comment to this post. I will share the location and another photo or two of this mystery location tomorrow.
Also, while you are here, here is a a preview of the January 2012 page of my calendar (on sale here!):

Small Business Saturday
In honor of Small Business Saturday, here are some great coupons to local small businesses in Portland that are valid today and tomorrow. The coupons are via Portland's Downtown District.

Thanksgiving Day 4-Miler
Here are a few photos from today's 30th annual Thanksgiving Day 4-miler. The course involves a "two loop tour of Portland's Downtown and Old Port districts" and is held rain, shine, or freezing cold temperatures (as was the case this morning). A portion of this year's proceeds benefited the St. Patricks' Secondary School in Iten, Kenya and also Portland Trails. There was also a food drive aspect, benefitting Project FEED.

Busiest Travel Day
They say today is the busiest travel day of the year. Here are a few photos of the Jetport, taken during the terminal expansion open house back in October.

Merrill's Wharf
Merrill's Wharf is off of Commercial Street (as wharves in Portland tend to be) in the Old Port area. It's an active wharf that's home to marine operations and also the newly renovated Cumberland Cold Storage building which is now home to the law firm Pierce Atwood LLP. Yesterday's lobster boat photos were from the same wharf. Here's some more:

American Censorship Day
In case you haven't been on the internet all day and missed it, today is American Censorship Day, because today the US House Judiciary Committee has a hearing on the Stop Online Piracy Act. Check out this website for some interesting details about how this act could negatively affect the internet at large. This article on Wired.com has a good summary of today's proceedings. To summarize the potential negative aspects of the act, if implemented:
"It would, in effect, allow companies to bypass the judicial system and take down or block websites simply by accusing a user of posting just potentially infringing content on a website. That could be as little as posting on a forum and talking about product, posting a picture of you with a logo in it, or posting a video with music in the background..."As an internet content creator, a very small and insignificant one, I think these are valid concerns and I throw my support with the American Censorship Day organization.

Better Know a Street: Wall Street
Located off the peninsula in the Riverton neighborhood, Wall Street is a surprisingly quaint and quiet residential street. You can find this street on Google maps here. I expected to see some Occupy Maine protesters here but there were none in sight.
Corner of Wall Street and Forest Avenue. Yes, that is my new (used) bicycle. |

Mailboat Run
More photos from the Casco Bay Lines mailboat run. I took the trip as part of a recent Maine Photography Flickr Group Meetup. This year-round cruise departs twice daily and is described as such on the CBL website:
"An integral part of our island communities, the Mailboat is a true working boat carrying passengers, mail and freight to the islands of Casco Bay—Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Long, Cliff and Chebeague. As the longest-operating service of its kind, this tour is a wonderful way to see the sights of the Bay."

2012 Calendar
The 2012 calendar is now available over here at Cafepress. Clicking the image below will also take you to the page where you can place an order. 2012 is still a ways out, but I've gotten more than one email asking about the calendar so I have been busy working on it the last week. If 12 months is too much of a commitment, you can always purchase individual prints of my photos here. If anyone has any questions or suggestions about this year's calendar, feel free to shoot me an email.

Mayoral Election Signs
A little mosaic of mayoral signs around town. All 15 candidates are represented. (Note -The John Eder sign is a picture taken of my computer screen because I haven't seen any Eder signs around town in the last several days. Also, some signs are cut off a little due to the automatic mosaic maker which saves time).
