Jewell Island - Towards the Sea

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, Jewell Island has a couple of old observation towers that are still standing which provide pretty amazing views of Casco Bay. Here is a shot from the taller tower looking towards the open water.

I am slowly starting to sift through my photos from Jewell Island that I got last week. A quick and scenic ride on the Rita B. brought me out to this unique Casco Bay Island to watch the sunset and explore the old observation towers. Pictured below is one of the several campsites that are available to overnight visitors.

Night Lights

Pictured today is the main branch of the Portland Public Library. The first phase of renovations completed in 2010 revamped the entrance area along Congress Street (among many other interior improvements) and I look forward to seeing whatever the next phase of renovation brings.

Slow Ride

A sign on High Street politely asks drives to "drive slowly" due to the valet parking at the Westin hotel. As noted in this recent New York Times article, actually slowing traffic to a safe speed is more successful by context (designing roads for lower speeds) than just signage.

Casco Bay Lines Expansion

There will be a formal grand opening of the new Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal at the State Pier at 10:30 this morning. The impressive new terminal was designed by Scott Simons Architects and per the Casco Bay Lines website it will help them handle the "nearly one million passengers, 30,000 vehicles and 5,300 tons of freight" they accomodate annually.
