Better Know a Street: MacMillan Road

MacMillan Road is an obscure little street nestled off of Congress Street near Bramhall Square. The road doesn't have any buildings directly on it and is only about 200 feet long, connecting parking lots for Holt Hall and the Bramhall Fire Station to Congress Street. 

What drew me to photograph this not-so-picturesque street was actually the name of the street itself. According to an article on the Portland Club's website,  MacMillan Road is named after Donald MacMillan (1874-1970). He was born in Provincetown, Massachusetts but spent a good portion of his life in Maine. MacMillan is best known for his arctic expeditions in the early 1900's. He famously accompanied fellow Mainer Robert Peary on his quest to be the first man to reach the North Pole in 1908 as part of his support team (although MacMillan had to turn around before reaching the Pole). 

Better Know a Street: Wall Street

Located off the peninsula in the Riverton neighborhood, Wall Street is a surprisingly quaint and quiet residential street. You can find this street on Google maps here. I expected to see some Occupy Maine protesters here but there were none in sight.

Better Know a Street: Berwick Street

Berwick Street

Here's a look at Portland's Berwick Street. I hadn't explored this little area of Portland previously and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if this is considered to be East Deering or if there is another name for this neighborhood between I-295 and Casco Bay. As far as this particular street goes, I don't have much information about this street other than a few photos. I presume the name is somehow related to Berwick, Maine, which itself is named after Berwick-upon-Tweed, England (per wikipedia).

Part of the view at the end of the street. The Maine Yacht Center is in the foreground and the Eastern Promenade is straight ahead. Also, the B&M Baked Beans factory is to the right of this photo a bit.

Better Know a Street: South Street

Today, lets take a peek at South Street. This street is 254 feet long (measured here) and is a dead end road accessed from Pleasant Street. Before the Spring Street arterial and the Civic Center was created, I believe this street connected over to Spring Street and perhaps beyond. Prior to getting to know this street better, if someone asked me "how do you get to South Street from here?" I would have had no idea. So know I know,  and maybe you will remember where it is, too.
