Longfellow Square has a Christmas tree, sort of. I think this tree is in the window of a unisex salon called 'Tonic" (correct me if I am mistaken).

A Cold December Night

I've been having good luck with night photos recently, despite the low temperatures that make me not want to stop in one place too long to snap a photo. Here's a couple shots from Tommy's Park in the Old Port. This first one is the alley behind the Grill Room restaurant:

Also, thanks to everyone who has purchased a 2011 wall calendar that I created . If anyone is doing some last minute shopping, there is still time to get a copy of this calendar before Christmas. And of course, there is plenty of time to order one before the new year, when a 2011 calendar will actually be useful.

Before & After: Gorham's Corner

Here's a little before & after action in the Gorham's Corner neighborhood, near the corner of York and Danforth Streets.  The old photo comes from the Maine Memory Network, and is circa 1904. The new photo is from me and is from a couple of days ago:

I was going to photoshop this photo of the side of the Eastland Hotel so the windows made some sort of message, but I gave up and  did this instead:

The State

It's been re-opened since October, but I still enjoy walking by the State Theater and seeing it open again:

Bayside Ice Rink

I suggested the installation of a reflecting pool down here back in August (see this post). The puddle here has continued to exist all year long, perhaps in homage to the prior geography of this area (some of Bayside was once underwater as part of Back Cove). Since it is now winter time, I suggest the installation of a skating rink. Perhaps the Pirates could even play a season or two down here so a new civic center can be built.

But we must act fast to put up the skating rink, as the city has used this lot for dumping snow removed from city streets and sidewalks the last several winters. Here it is today:
