Before and After: Maine Medical Center

For this entry in the Before & After series we shall take a look at Maine Medical Center. The hospital was opened in 1874 and is located along the scenic Western Promenade. The top photo below was taken in the 1900's and is from the Library of Congress website. As you can see in my photo, the bottom one, much of the main structure is still in use. The hospital continues to expand, so it will be interesting to see if this particular view is much different a hundred years from now.

  1. I would be interesting if there was a different "before" view. Maine Medical Center absolutely dominates the hill now, between facilities and the huge parking garages. It wasn't like that before.

  2. The two wings on either side of the center section were built at different times, but not that far apart, the original plans included two more wings behind the two seen here but they were not built, the answer is lost in time as to why not.

  3. The original Maine Medical Center building is one of my favorite structures in Portland. I love being able to look up to Bramhall Hill & seeing the original cupola amidst the more recent dominating monstrosity.
