It was announced at the end of September that the Point's future concert venue will be managed by the manager of the State Theater, which sounds very promising. Here are two shots from around the edge of the peninsula. You can see some of my previous coverage of Thompson's Point here.

Thompson's Point - March 2012

I posted some photos of Thompson's Point last summer and was down there again recently so here are the photographic results. According to many sources, such as this one, work on the "Forefront on Thompson's Point" development will commence sometime this year. When completed it will feature a 3,500 seat arena for the Maine Red Claws, an 80,000 square foot event center, a hotel, and office/retail/restaurant space. It's very much worth checking out in its current condition before it is lost to history. Although this is private property,  a Portland Trails trail wraps around the point and is open to the general public.

Flashback: Thompson's Point, August 2013

Thompson's Point - October 2015

A few shots around Thompson's Point from last week.  It's exciting to see a little bit of progress here as this old industrial area transforms into a vibrant multi-use neighborhood.

Thompson's Point

Here are some 'before' photos of  Thompson's Point.  This piece of land sits behind the Portland Transportation Center (Amtrak and Concord Coach Lines) and adjacent to I-295. It has been an industrial site for many years and is the spot of the planned "The Forefront" development. The Forefront will involve a new arena for the Maine Red Claws basketball team, a hotel, convention center, and office space. If  you  want  to check out the area for yourself, Portland Trails has a trail around the point which also links easily to the Fore River Parkway Trail and the Stroudwater trails. 

Thompson's Point - Inside Looking Out

Construction of the proposed development at Thompson's Point is still a ways off, so I continue to gather up photos of the Point in it's current state. Here's one looking out of one of the abandoned industrial buildings. I've heard that the roof of this building was originally part of the train shed at Portland's Union Station. 

And, some bonus content today: I decided to test out the time-lapse feature on my D600 for the first time (so be kind).

The Rink at Thompson's Point

If you're tired of waiting for natural ice to form on a nearby pond, you are in luck! I stopped by the new Ice Rink at Thompson's Point yesterday and the ice is looking good. In addition to skating, there is food and drink on site, as well as a heating area for when winter kicks in.

Outtakes - April 1-7, 2012

As I often say, I take a lot of photos that I don't end up posting here. It's always better to take too many photos of a scene than not enough, and that means I delete a lot of photos that don't quite "make the cut." Here are some "outtakes" from photos I posted the previous week. I've been meaning to start doing this for a while now, so this week is as good as any.

A bit of the surrounding buildings reflected against the old Union Station clock tower which sits in Congress Square Park. Once the square is redesigned the clock will find a new home. Perhaps it will join a portion of the old Union Station train shed that is over at Thompson's Point.

Fisherman and the Bridge

This is underneath the bridge that carries I-295 over the Fore River, by Thompson's Point and the Airport. I wouldn't eat any fish from these waters but it's a good catch-and-release place I suppose.

Bench on a Boat

This clever bench is along the Thompson's Point Trail. As you can see, it's an old  boat  with a bench carved out of one side. If they are still looking for designs for benches to place on the Bayside Trail, perhaps the designer of this piece has some more ideas.

These views are from the Western Promenade, looking out from the city in a Western direction.

The hills of Western Maine and the White Mountains in the distance. Closer to Portland, the smokestacks on the right side of the image are from the S.D. Warren paper mill in Westbrook (also featured in this post from last month). 

This view is looking slightly more southwest, and features Thompson's Point in the foreground.
