Above the Hub

Looking down at Fore Street. This is from the same level of the parking garage that yesterday's photo was taken. It's a good place for  a bird's-eye view of the Old Port.

Everett Hotel

This building at 51 Oak Street, right off on Congress in Portland's Arts District, was once the Everett Hotel. The picture on the city website's property lookup page shows the building as also being the Oak Leaf Hotel at one time. It currently functions as dorms for nearby MECA and has ground floor retail and restaurant space.

I am in favor of the Everett Hotel sign being re-painted here:

Portland Pink Tulip Project

Today's photo is of the pink tulips in Lincoln Park. The Pink Tulip Project, per their website, is:

...A fundraising project that benefits the Women's Cancer Fund at the Maine Cancer Foundation. Gardens are established to raise funds, create awareness and support for those who have been affected by breast cancer and beautify the community. Established in 2001, the Women's Cancer Fund ensures that resources would always be available for breast and other cancers that affect women.
Be sure to check out their website for more details and ways to get involved.

Long Wharf

Here are a couple photos along Portland's Long Wharf. The photos were taken on different days but it kind of looks like they were taken the same day because it was the same foggy overcast for about a week. Nice to see some sun this morning!

Swap Maine

The inaugural Swap Maine event is happening this Saturday, May 21st. Perhaps you have seen posters like these around town announcing the clothing swap event:

Check out the Swap Maine website for all the details. To summarize, the event is happening Saturday from 10-4 and is at Head Games Salon, at 116 Free Street. The event benefits Goodwill and tickets are $10, but if  you drop off a bag of clothes for the swap (which you can do tonight from 4-7 at Head Games Salon) you  get free admission. If you bring a bag of clothes the day of the swap then the ticket is $5, or if  you show up with no clothes it's only $10 and the proceeds benefit a great cause (Goodwill).

On the Road: Cape Elizabeth

Here are a few pictures from the town of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, which is just south of Portland. The far left picture is from Two Lights State Park and the other two are from Kettle Cove Beach.

And here is a little collage of the famed Lobster Shack at Two Lights:

Under Construction

I don't think I have posted pictures of some new buildings under construction on the peninsula in a while.

These first three pictures are of the Portside Residences / Hampton Inn Hotel / Sebago Brewing Company Restaurant building on the corner of Fore and Franklin Streets. Per Munjoy Hill News, Sebago Brewing will be opening over memorial day weekend and the hotel will be opening in July.

Progress being made on the Oak Street Lofts, a new Avesta property. Located on... Oak Street. Formerly a parking lot. I'm looking forward to following the building's progress. It will be four stories in height, containing 37 apartments and some sort of community space on the first floor. It is aimed towards artists.

This new building at 231 York Street, by the bridge, is going be a new restaurant named River House. Per Portland Food Map, it is by the owners of nearby El Rayo. This was formerly the site of  the Ice House / Popeye's

Reader Photos - Courtney Vermette

Let's take a look at a couple photos sent in by a photographer named Courtney Vermette. Courtney doesn't live in Portland, but she travels here every summer and brings her camera along for the trip. Check out her website, Vermette Photography, and some more of  her Portland photos here. Nice work!

Gingko Blue Jazz and Blues Lounge

I think this place is opening sometime soon. Gingko Blue is a project of  the owners of Walter's restaurant, which is located in the same building (it was previously on Exchange Street). This is at the corner of Fore Street and Union Street. I think the signage and front entrance look pretty sharp.

It's All About the Skyline

Another take from the bridge the other day:

As I mentioned yesterday, I have uploaded a larger size of yesterday's panorama. I can't seem to get it to upload at the larger size on blogger, so here is it over at imageshack if you are curious.
