Bikeable December

Pictured is a bike lane symbol painted on Preble Street, heading into town. I need colder temperatures and snow for my photography, but the bike commuter part of me does benefit from the mild weather we have had so far.

The Rink at Thompson's Point

If you're tired of waiting for natural ice to form on a nearby pond, you are in luck! I stopped by the new Ice Rink at Thompson's Point yesterday and the ice is looking good. In addition to skating, there is food and drink on site, as well as a heating area for when winter kicks in.

Bayside Reuse

The old Schlotterbeck & Foss Co. Building from Kennebec Street in the Bayside neighborhood. Schlotterbeck & Foss, a producer of food and flavorings, has moved operations off of the peninsula, which opens up the building for reuse. According to The Forecaster, the building will be developed into housing, containing 55 one-bedroom and studio units.

You Say You Want a Revolution

The current view from one of the old scrap yards in Bayside between the Bayside Trail and Somerset Street. The area will go through a revolution of sorts once work begins on the mixed-use Midtown development. The 3.5 acre Midtown development is slated to bring over 400 new (and much needed) residential units to the city as well as additional retail space.

Still Standing

The "padlocks of love" are still affixed to this small fence along Commercial Street, between Portland Lobster Company and Long Wharf. Earlier this year, locks were cleared from the famous Pont des Arts bridge in Paris due to structural concerns. So we will see how long the Portland fence stays upright.

I saw that the holiday lights in Congress Square Park were illuminated on Saturday. It appears to have been a test run since they weren't lit up last night, but they should be back on soon. I look forward to photographing the lights and Pandora LaCasse's light sculptures every winter.

An Autumn Sight

These trees near the corner of Commercial Street and Union Wharf are a sight for every season. I've documented them each spring when the leaves are a brilliant mixture of purple and white, and this time of year they get that nice dark yellow shade. From a compositional perspective, this set of trees also frames the sidewalk quite well.

The Gothic House

The John J. Brown House (also known as "The Gothic House") is one of many properties in Portland that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house dates back to 1845, but has only been in it's current location on Spring Street since 1971. The structure was moved at that time to make way for the Holiday Inn complex. For more info, check out the Greater Portland Landmarks website.
