Zamboni

A recent news update from the Press Herald....

Police charge man with OUI on Zamboni

"A Portland man faces charges of drunk driving and burglary after police found him atop an idling Zamboni inside the Cumberland County Civic Center this morning."

Hmmm.

Snowy Oak

I thought I posted this days ago, but don't see it...so here you go. It is very lightly snowing this morning (supposed to get about an inch total) so this picture is kind of fitting.

Porteous Mitchell & Braun

I think they should repaint this sign, for the sake of nostalgia. This is the former Porteous Mitchell and Braun department store on Congress Street, which since 1993 has been the flagship building for the Maine College of Art.

love.downtown.more

Here's my first attempt at a new Portland's Downtown District logo. I had a visitor who works for PDD comment on my earlier post about their logo, so I hope she sees this also. I will periodically post new version when I am feeling creative.

Size

This is a cell phone picture from the summer. The Casco Bay ferries are usually the biggest things in these waters except for when it's cruise ship season.

From left to right, Arts District bulletin, Starbucks/The Hay Building, Children's Museum, and Museum of Art. There is also a snow covered road between the bulletin and the buildings.

Heard it through the snow vine

The 23rd

Greetings to readers from the Justin Ellis blog on the Press Herald website. I always know I am featured there when I see a spike in visits to my site. Also featured in this issue is our friend at Original Portland.

I will try to post a picture tonight if I find myself near a computer. Until then, have a good day.

You Are Here

Looking out from the living room at the fresh snow. (Never mind the smudges) Much more is predicted for tomorrow.

Portland's Downtown District

Portlandmaine.com is the virtualhome of Portland's Downtown District.

According to their About Us section...

Portland's Downtown District (PDD) is a not-for-profit 501c(4) organization
founded in 1992. It is funded by a tax assessment on property within the
boundaries of the District. All property owners and tenants are considered
members of Portland's Downtown District.

The mission of Portland's Downtown District (PDD) is to act as a leader and facilitator in the support and promotion of the economic vitality of downtown Portland.

You may also see their logo here and there around town, they also have the tagline "love.downtown.more." :

It's not horrible looking. I don't mind the colors. but it looks like what I see when I take my glasses off. I think a more clear and to the point logo would be appropriate. It would be a plus also if it evoked imagery of the city instead of myopia.

Here is my 5 second Microsoft Paint updated PDD logo:

So mine sucks too. But I am going to do some photoshoping when I get home!

Before and After #6

Longfellow Square, looking East

In 1921, from Maine Memory

And by me in 2008
The only big visible difference in this one is there used to be a church on the left of the picture, on Congress St. It's funny that Joe's Smoke Shop building looks exactly the same.

City website update

I received an email from the city's webmaster yesterday and they are currently planning on getting started on a new website in January.

So, good news there. I strongly recommend Portland residents use the "eContact" link I posted in yesterday's post. Suggestions and concerns are replied to very quickly and could be a valuable tool if you don't know who to contact.

City of Portland

Does anyone else feel that the official City of Portland website needs a fresh look? It appears to have been created in the late 90's.

There are dozens of web design companies in the city that should be calling the city and urging them to start the bidding for a new design. What better way to promote our fine city than with a fine website? It would also be good if it were more friendly for the current residents.

I urge you to suggest a new design via the "eContact System" on the city website. I have!

And this article has some interesting rankings of the best "E-Government websites," including states, cities, and counties. Maybe we can get some ideas?

Until December

Haven't taken any shots around here in a while. Here are some shots of Deering Oaks Park from this weekend. Looks like the pond will be ready to skate on soon.

And also, I miss the summer when I could take pictures almost any time. Now the only time I am able to take day pictures is on the weekend, assuming it's not ten below zero or raining ice. So that should explain all of the night shots I've posted recently and will continue to post in the near future.

Ice

Taken on my phone this morning. I think it's sideways. Anyways, you can see some ice on some sort of tree.

Stand By

I will be taking a little break due to a hard drive/windows issue. I might be able to upload a few items on a different computer soon though.

Please check out all of the other great local blogs listed in the column to the right!

This is a call

I am now accepting suggestions for a new blog name.

The current name isn't too bad since this is a blog about "Portland, Maine" and there are photos but I would like to get away from the 'daily' part. There are times when I post every day and times when I take a little break so I feel like 'daily photo' is a bit misleading to the audience.

Also, I don't want to mimic several other fine local blogs which cover some news and opinion, but...I would like to do a little more than just post photos too. I still like taking photos and will definitely remain the Daily Photo community.

Guidelines for a new name:
  • It would be good to have Portland somewhere in the title
  • Should be easy to spell
  • Be memorable
Godaddy.com was (still is?) having a good sale on domains (not that they are more than $9 a year to begin with) and I recently registered portlandopolis.com but don't know if I want to do something else with that or use it for this blog. I think I would most like that to be something else.

So, any ideas? Maybe I should have bought some prizes.

Before and After #5

Neither of today's before and after photos were taken by me. But I like them.
From 1940 (via mainemeory.net)

...And from 2008 (via microsoft live search maps)

things look pretty similar except for the addition of I-295 on the left and the expansion of Hadlock Field. The addition of I-295 clearly interrupted this neighborhood, as well as every other one which it passes through. For a detailed and interesting proposal on how to replace this freeway, visit C Neals' Rights of Way blog.

Congress Square

Congress Square needs some attention too. This is taken from a bench in front of the Museum of Art. The State Theater Building is on the left and the Eastland Park Hotel is on the right. Congress Square is at the intersection of Congress and State Streets and is considered to be in the "Arts District."

Solve a Crime

Today was my first time coming across the solve-a-crime page on the police department's website. The most recent entry is from September but it's still pretty neat. Maybe they could do a daily photo blog and each day post a picture of someone they are looking for or a missing person or something. Just an idea if anyone from the department is reading this.

As promised

I will have to come back on less rainy evening for some more shots.
