The White Heart

thewhiteheartportlandmaineThe White Heart Bar & Cocktail Lounge on Congress Street, pictured above (on the left, with the heart on the front entrance) on a cold evening. It recently opened in 2006 but seems to have been a hit since the start. See their mention as one of the best bars in America in Esquire Magazine here.

Wanted: Internet Expert

I am no expert on the matter and am hoping that maybe someone out there has some ideas on this matter.

The subject: Google Image Search

Issue: A good example of this isssue is if you search for 'Port City Music Hall' on google image search. The 4th result is currently a picture of me, the picture on my blog in the 'about me' section. Below the photo of me it says 'Port City Music Hall..." Clearly, my photo of this venue should show up here and not a picture of me. Am I doing something wrong when posting my images? If I remove the 'about me' section with my picture will I still have the 4th result but it will just be blank? There are many search phrases which show a picture of me instead of my blog.

The reward: You will be considered an Internet expert (by me at least).

Land of the ice and snow

I posted a shot from this spot in the fall with all the pretty foliage so here is a recent follow-up.

Green Streets

The Portland Green Street's flyer I made a while back is now up on their website, feel free to print it from here and hang few out and hang them around town! (Print in black and white if you don't want to run out of green ink)

Tech. Diff.

I will work on the difficulties later today. Somehow my right column got messed up.

Update: Looks like everything is back in it's place!

Crooked Congress

In other news, it's supposed to snow quite a bit today. Here's to hoping I get out of work early due to the inclement weather.

Also in other news, check out the 'Port City Show,' put on by Portland Photo Works / Original Portland. If you have any suggestions for what I should submit, let me know!

Play Me I'm Yours

Anyone else think this is neat?

Street pianos are appearing in cities across the world. Located in skate
parks, industrial estates, laundrettes, precincts, bus shelters and train
stations, outside pubs and football grounds, the pianos are for any member of
the public to enjoy and claim ownership of.

Who plays them and how long they remain is up to each community. The
pianos act as sculptural, musical, blank canvases that become a reflection of
the communities they are embedded into. Many pianos are personalised and
decorated.

Could Portland handle something like this?

Radar Love

Another slow day for news. From the Press Herald:

After speeding comes a ticket. After that, comes...marriage?

A Maine State Police trooper recently pulled over a driver on Interstate 95 in Clinton. The young woman was allegedly cruising along at 92 mph, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. As the trooper completed his paperwork, a male passenger asked to speak to the officer and showed him an engagement ring he planned to give to his fiancee.....(whole story)

Congress Square Sunrise

Taken yesterday morning on the way to the bus stop. It's looked like this almost every morning lately and finally decided to take action and capture the event.

Port City Music Hall

After a postponement of Saturday's grand opening show due to a delay in licensing, it looks like the PCMH is ready to open with tomorrow evening's show featuring Lovewhip, The Fire Water Band, Putnam Smith, and Jordan Valentine & The Sunday Saints. It starts at 8pm and tickets are $9 D.O.S. or $8 in advance. I do hope they do something with the front of their wonderfully located building (which houses The Stadium on the Free St. side). Maybe a big sign saying 'Port City Music Hall' or a marquee or something. Actually, a marquee would be wonderful. However, I doubt zoing laws would allow that.

Those were the Days

This is from this past summer. Doesn't it look nice? It's -15 F at the moment. Should be the last day of extreme cold I believe.

DiMillo's

A snippet from an advertisement on the press herald website (some great deals by the way)...

25 years afloat since 1954? I would have figured it was floating the whole time. Turns out, they get the 1954 date from the opening of their first restaurant, "Anthony's," (not related to Anthony's on Middle Street) which was not floating since it was on Fore Street. I think their sign is a little misleading and should maybe instead read: Dimillo's Floating Restaurant, open under various names and locations since 1954 and floating since 1982. That is a mouthful though, so probably best to keep it like it is.

An informative history and the full menu of DiMillo's can be found here. And no, I'm not being paid by DiMillo's (but I wouldn't mind if I was) and will yes I will post a photo of mine when I get home.

Shipping

Wednesday

I will try to post a photo today when I get home from work.

In the meantime, I waned to mention the challenges which myself and other photo takers in the northern hemisphere likely face this time of year: Cold and Darkness. When I wake up, the sun is still rising and when I get home it is dark. It is cold all the time. These two conditions make it hard to take a lot of pictures this time of year. I post a few night shots every now and then, but I prefer daylight pictures due to how easy they are to take and how it's usually a little warmer during the day. I usually try to get out during the day on the weekends to take pictures and then post those pictures throughout the coming week or two. I much prefer the summer for photo taking when it's pretty warm all the time and it's perfectly light out until late in the evening. Anyone else face these challenges?

Changes

I am playing around with the look of the blog again, hope it turns out well. For the first time I am experimenting with a template not made by blogger so there will be some trial and error with the layout. You will notice that this new layout has a nice wide column for pictures and words, as opposed to the more narrow style of the last design. Looks like I will have to redesign the header image again, but I don't mind. This custom template also has a lot more customization as far as colors and layout so I will be working behind the scenes this weekend. Also, if a link to your site is missing feel free to send me an email as I am trying to restore those to what they were yesterday.

Down on the Corner

I tried taking this photo several times on several nights and never really got what I was looking for, this being the closest to my vision. Bringing a tripod would have helped I think.

Watching the wheels

Not sure what I was really going for with this one, but it kind of has a cinematic touch. Good enough.

Portland Maine Daily 2009

Happy New Year and Such! This is also the one year anniversary of this blog and the 222nd post. That means I posted daily almost 61% of the time. To be fair, I did not have internet at home for several months. Anyhow, it's a start.

I tried to take a cool picture of the snow blowing over the railing here, but this was the best I could do without getting frostbite on my nose.
