From Waterville Street:
This is a general question. These old stone markers are on many sidewalks around town. They seem to have a M or a W carved into them. Can anyone confirm what they mark? My best guess is that the letter is a W and perhaps it indicates a water line or something.
I've always wondered about that, too. I think I've decided that they just stand for "Malcolm."
ReplyDeleteThey're survey monuments that mark the precise location of city street corners, for the purposes of property surveys. Some of them mark ghost streets that don't exist anymore. I'm not sure what the "M" stands for, but "monument" would be my best guess.
